Parents, Partners and Carers Group Experiences

“I have always found the parents/carers drop in is very helpful as an informal addition to the mainstream support from Assert. It allows parents and carers to meet others in a more relaxed atmosphere where different experiences can be shared or simply enjoy the company without any obligation or pressure, knowing those around you understand how you may feel.  There is always a feeling of support and that the group is always there to drop into whenever you want.”

Over these past six years I have learnt so much, felt supported and also made good, lifelong friends who will always understand our situation, which cannot be underestimated.

“It was with trepidation that I went, six years ago, to my first Assert Parents Carers support social evening , as having a newly diagnosed intelligent adult child, it was already overwhelming , but I felt immediately at home and comfortable with the group where there is no need for explanation, no judgement is made and where there is an ingrained camaraderie where we have laughed and cried together about our experiences and worries, but also we exchange invaluable advice and support within a relaxed social environment where we may also simply chat about usual everyday things that affect our families in general. Over these past six years I have learnt so much, felt supported and also made good, lifelong friends who will always understand our situation, which cannot be underestimated.”

“Regarding the meet ups, I would say that it has given Jan & I the opportunity to meet other parents with offspring who have similar problems and to be able to finally express the problems that crop up. We had never met anyone before the meet ups who experienced what we had and it was a total relief. Admittedly it took a couple of years for me to summon up the courage to come along to the meetings but we were made to feel very welcome and found everyone very approachable and have made some good close friends.”

“I have been going to Assert’s PDG’s for the best part of six years. Since the beginning I have found myself in a welcoming and understanding group of people who have a big part of their lives in common with mine, we share tips, we exchange information, sometimes we cry….but mostly we laugh a lot! I get to have some guilt-free me-time and chat about things that would normally (in a different group of people) require a LOT of explaining. I have made a couple of good friends and many awesome acquaintances, so, I can only recommend that, as soon as they recommence, join us, oh! and do make a note on your diary for our Xmas dinner, not to be missed.”
